Yuga Labs, the creator of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), has launched Mudwater, a new collection of physical and digital trading cards on the Solana blockchain, expanding its digital collectibles ecosystem beyond Ethereum.

The collection officially debuted on October 17, 2026, during ApeFest 2026 in Charleston, South Carolina, allowing holders of Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFTs to claim trading card packs.

The launch introduces a new way for collectors to engage with Bored Ape artwork through blockchain-backed ownership, physical collectibles and trading rewards.

Mudwater’s first collection, titled Swamp Origins, features 120 unique artworks inspired by BAYC characters, including standard cards, foil editions, serialized collectibles and rare cracked-ice variants.

BAYC and MAYC Holders Can Claim Free Mudwater Packs

Under the collection’s distribution structure, existing Bored Ape and Mutant Ape NFT holders are eligible to receive complimentary card packs based on their ownership.

Each BAYC NFT qualifies for 10 packs, while every MAYC NFT is eligible for two packs. Each pack contains 10 trading cards.

Eligible collectors have until January 19, 2027, to claim their allocations.

The claim process uses an Ethereum-based mechanism called Totems, built on the ERC-6551 token-bound account standard.

These Totems connect existing Ethereum NFTs with their corresponding Mudwater allocations, allowing users to access digital trading cards issued on Solana.

Although the card allocations are complimentary, collectors may still incur blockchain transaction fees and separate pack-opening costs.

Mudwater Introduces 2.4 Million Physical and Digital Trading Cards

The inaugural Mudwater release has a fixed supply of 10,000 boxes, with each box containing 24 packs.

This brings the total collection to 240,000 packs and approximately 2.4 million individual trading cards.

According to the project’s allocation structure, 7,134 boxes, representing 71.34% of the total supply, have been reserved for distribution to the existing Bored Ape community.

Another 2,000 boxes, equivalent to 20% of supply, are designated for commercial distribution.

The remaining allocation includes 566 boxes for community onboarding initiatives and 300 boxes for partner communities.

Physical production is being handled by Orange Cap Games, while the corresponding blockchain-based collectibles are issued through Solana.

Among the collection’s rarest assets are eight serialized cracked-ice cards, each designed as a unique one-of-one collectible.

Yuga Labs Connects Ethereum NFTs With Solana Collectibles

Mudwater represents a notable development in Yuga Labs’ blockchain strategy by bringing Bored Ape-linked digital assets to Solana.

Traditionally, BAYC and MAYC collections have operated on Ethereum, while Yuga Labs has also developed its ecosystem through ApeChain, an Ethereum Layer-2 network.

The new collection introduces a cross-chain model in which NFT ownership and claim eligibility are established through Ethereum, while the trading cards themselves are represented by NFTs on Solana.

Collectors can trade Mudwater Totems, unopened packs and individual cards through the OpenSea marketplace.

The project also plans to introduce functionality allowing digital collectibles to be exchanged for corresponding physical cards.

However, the physical-to-digital conversion system remains under development, with further details about redemption procedures and custody arrangements still to be announced.

Mudwater Trading Rewards Introduce ApeCoin Incentives

A key feature of the Mudwater ecosystem is a trading rewards mechanism linked to ApeCoin (APE), the cryptocurrency associated with the wider Bored Ape ecosystem.

Under the announced structure, qualifying Mudwater NFT transactions include a 2.5% reflection fee alongside a separate 2.5% royalty.

The reflection fee is designed to support purchases of APE tokens, which are subsequently distributed among eligible collectors based on their Mudwater holdings.

This creates a mechanism connecting secondary-market activity with token rewards.

As trading activity increases, the system could generate additional ApeCoin purchases and distributions to participating collectors.

However, the actual volume of APE purchases will depend on marketplace activity, and the rewards mechanism does not guarantee sustained token demand or financial returns.

The effectiveness of the model will depend on collector participation, trading volumes and overall market conditions.

Solana Expansion Opens New Opportunities for NFT Collectors

Yuga Labs’ decision to launch Mudwater on Solana marks an expansion of its established NFT intellectual property into another blockchain ecosystem.

Solana has developed an active market for digital collectibles, supported by its transaction infrastructure and NFT trading platforms.

By issuing Mudwater assets on Solana, Yuga Labs is seeking to introduce Bored Ape-related products to additional collectors while providing existing BAYC and MAYC holders with new opportunities to use their NFTs.

The combination of physical trading cards, digital ownership and marketplace incentives also reflects broader experimentation within the NFT industry as projects explore applications beyond traditional profile-picture collections.

For existing Bored Ape holders, Mudwater provides access to an additional collection tied to their current NFT ownership.

For Yuga Labs, the project offers an opportunity to assess demand for blockchain-linked physical collectibles and cross-chain experiences.

Mudwater’s Long-Term Success Depends on Collector Demand

Despite the launch’s new features, the commercial outlook for Mudwater remains uncertain.

The collection’s performance will depend on several factors, including sustained collector interest, secondary-market trading activity and the successful introduction of physical card redemption functionality.

Its ApeCoin rewards mechanism may encourage participation, but trading incentives alone do not guarantee lasting engagement or stronger demand for NFTs.

The launch nevertheless represents another effort by Yuga Labs to expand the Bored Ape Yacht Club brand through new collectible formats and blockchain infrastructure.

With claims remaining open until January 19, 2027, the coming months will provide an early indication of how existing NFT holders and new collectors respond to the Mudwater ecosystem.
