A Fusion of Art and Digital Innovation
An ambitious new NFT project created in partnership with TAEX, Marina Abramovic Element (MAE), is poised to make ripples in the digital art world. Marina Abramovic is a well-known performance artist. This innovative project will be spread over three separate NFT drops, each of which will include collecting digital materials and immersive activities that allow viewers to fully immerse themselves in the artist’s legacy.
Exclusive Preview and Launch Timeline
The project kicks off with an exclusive preview at London’s Moco Museum on April 8, 2025, ahead of the first NFT release in mid-May. Reflecting on this innovative venture, Abramovic stated, “Working today with technology and creating my own avatar is a way to develop a new relationship between the performer and the public. The public’s interaction provides the process through which immateriality can be transformed into energy.”
The Concept Behind Marina Abramovic Element
At the heart of Marina Abramovic Element is Legend, a fictional narrative inspired by Abramovic’s philosophy and life journey, which serves as the foundation for the collection’s three themed NFT drops: Art, Life, and the Marina Abramovic Method (MAM). Each release features exclusive digital artworks, categorized by rarity: “Ordinary” tokens present still images, “Rare” tokens offer looped animations, and “Epic” tokens dynamically adapt in real-time to lunar cycles.
Transformation Crystals and the Fifth Dimension
The addition of Transformation Crystals, a gamified component that increases user engagement and enables collectors to mint 5D MAE Performance or 5D MAE Avatar video NFTs, is a unique aspect of MAE. Abramovic describes these crystals as essential conduits of energy, stating, “To enter the fifth dimension, one’s body must transform. You will be able to carry your body to the fourth dimension, but not to the fifth dimension because your body is too heavy. You will have a crystal in your body in the fifth dimension.”
A Breakdown of NFT Drops
The project will unfold as follows:
Mid-May 2025: Abramovic’s artistic work will be examined in the first drop, Art, which will incorporate famous symbols from her career and convert analog images into digital performances.
June 2025: Life, the second drop, will blend locations and gestures to reflect Abramovic’s personal and artistic journey.
September 2025: The final drop, Marina Abramovic Method (MAM), will immerse participants in her unique approach to endurance, self-discovery, and consciousness.
The Great Mint: The Ultimate Collection
The Great Mint, which will give the rarest and most precious NFTs in the collection, will mark the culmination of Marina Abramovic Element in November 2025. In order to acquire a desired 5D MAE token, players must have accumulated three Epic NFTs plus one Transformation Crystal or three Rare NFTs plus one Transformation Crystal. By using her digital persona, these video artworks will reenact Abramovic’s iconic acts, expanding the possibilities of performance art beyond the real world.
Interactive Games and Collectibles
Participants will also have the opportunity to earn Transformation Crystals through interactive games, such as Maze and Counting Crystals, or acquire them in a special drop in September 2025.
A Digital Evolution of Abramovic’s Legacy
“With Marina Abramovic Element, we are honored to bring her visionary practice into the digital realm, creating an immersive experience where participants from the worlds of art and Web3 become active co-creators of her legacy,” stated the project’s developers.
Since emerging as a pioneer of performance art in the early 1970s in Belgrade, Marina Abramovic has consistently pushed the boundaries of endurance, consciousness, and human connection. Her seminal works, such as Rhythm 0 (1974) and Rhythm 5 (1974), challenged the limits of self-exploration and audience interaction. In 2012, she established the Marina Abramovic Institute (MAI), dedicated to fostering performance and long-durational art.
With Marina Abramovic Element, the legendary artist once again redefines the relationship between art, time, and the audience, merging the physical with the digital in a transformative new era of artistic expression.
