Upbit and Bithumb Flag SAND Over Unresolved Security Concerns

SAND, the native token of The Sandbox metaverse platform, is facing fresh pressure after South Korea’s two largest cryptocurrency exchanges, Upbit and Bithumb, placed the asset on their investment caution lists on Aug. 24.

The exchanges cited unresolved security incidents involving SAND wallets or its distributed ledger. The warning is more significant than a routine volatility alert because it points to potential security or network-integrity concerns rather than simply weak market performance.

Bithumb has set a review window between Sept. 28 and Oct. 2. During that period, the exchange is expected to decide whether to remove the caution designation, extend it, or end support for SAND trading altogether. The uncertainty leaves traders facing several possible outcomes over the coming weeks.

Why the Caution Label Matters

South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges use investment caution designations when they identify elevated risks associated with a digital asset. Such warnings can influence trading conditions, deposit activity, leverage availability and the visibility of a token on an exchange.

A caution designation does not automatically mean that an asset will be delisted. However, it can precede a trading suspension or termination of support if the underlying concerns remain unresolved.

For SAND, the key issue is the nature of the warning. Exchanges commonly review assets because of factors such as insufficient liquidity, regulatory concerns or changes affecting a project. Security incidents involving wallets or distributed-ledger infrastructure raise a different set of concerns because they can affect confidence in the underlying network and its assets.

SAND Faces Pressure at a Difficult Time

The Sandbox has remained one of the best-known projects from the previous metaverse boom. Its blockchain-based virtual world allows users to create, own and trade digital assets and virtual land.

However, the broader metaverse and gaming-token sector has struggled to regain the speculative momentum seen during the 2021 market cycle. Investor attention has increasingly shifted toward other areas of the cryptocurrency market, including tokenized real-world assets and blockchain infrastructure.

That environment could make the latest warning more difficult for SAND to absorb. When market attention is already limited, a security-related designation from major exchanges can create additional selling pressure and reduce the number of buyers willing to take on short-term risk.

Why South Korea Matters

South Korea is an important market for cryptocurrency trading, particularly for altcoins and gaming-related projects. Local retail participation has historically given major Korean exchanges significant influence over token liquidity.

The fact that both Upbit and Bithumb issued caution notices at the same time could therefore have implications beyond South Korea. International traders may react to the warnings before Bithumb reaches its final decision, potentially affecting liquidity and order books on other exchanges.

The impact will also depend on how the underlying security issue develops. If the project can identify and resolve the incidents quickly, market confidence could recover. Continued uncertainty, however, could make traders more reluctant to maintain exposure to SAND.

What Bithumb’s Review Could Mean

Bithumb’s Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 review will be an important milestone for SAND. The exchange has not publicly specified the exact conditions required to remove the caution designation, leaving the project with the task of addressing the concerns surrounding the reported security incidents.

A clear explanation of what happened, evidence that the incidents have been contained and information showing that safeguards have been strengthened could help support a decision to remove the warning.

If the security questions remain unanswered, Bithumb could extend the caution period or take the more serious step of ending support for SAND trading.

For now, SAND remains under a caution designation rather than a confirmed delisting. There is also no indication in the source material that Upbit or Bithumb has suspended SAND deposits or withdrawals.

Still, the warning should not be dismissed as a routine market notice. The reference to wallet and distributed-ledger security gives the situation a different level of significance, particularly while the wider metaverse-token market remains under pressure.

For SAND holders and traders, the immediate focus will be on whether The Sandbox can provide enough clarity about the incidents before the exchanges conduct their reviews. Until then, uncertainty around the token’s exchange status is likely to remain an important factor for the market.
