The Ethereum NFT Game “Fantasy Top” Launches a Testnet to Expand to Monad

Growth Past Ethereum L2 Blast

The Ethereum-based NFT game Fantasy Top, which turns Crypto Twitter (X) into a fantasy sports environment, is expanding its reach. The game was first released on the layer-2 network Blast, but it is now also available on the recently released layer-1 blockchain Monad. A free-to-play version of the game will launch on Monad’s testnet, the developers revealed on Wednesday.

Social Media and Crypto Meet Fantasy Sports

While Fantasy Top functions similarly to conventional fantasy sports, it substitutes prominent personalities from the cryptocurrency community on X for athletes. These “heroes” receive points based on their social engagement measures rather than touchdowns or baskets. Players can employ the hero cards of well-known characters like Truth Terminal, ThreadGuy, and Ansem in their lineups during contests.

Version available for free on the Monad Testnet

Fantasy Top said in a statement:

“Today, we’re reviving the original spirit of Fantasy Top Free to Play, available only on the Monad testnet.”

The goal of the change is to make the game more accessible and reach 100,000 daily active users. Anyone can sign up, play, and compete for prizes in the new edition without worrying about money.

Hero Cards and Special Rewards

In addition to getting access to new heroes, players who take part in the Monad testnet experience will have the opportunity to be added to the whitelist for the most popular NFT collections that will be released on Monad’s mainnet. Users can also participate in competitions that provide prizes like XP, tickets, and fMON—the testnet currency used for transactions on the Fantasy Top marketplace—and receive a complimentary pack of 15 Fantasy Top hero cards.

Competitions Are About to Start

The first official Monad testnet competition is set to launch tomorrow at 10 AM ET, and contest registration is currently open. Travis Bickle, developer of Fantasy Top, was excited about the collaboration:

“This collaboration with Monad is a fantastic chance to expand the potential of on-chain experiences at scale.”

An Ethereum L2 Blast-Based Game

After its original introduction on Ethereum’s layer-2 network Blast, Fantasy Top quickly expanded. Early on, the game attracted 31,000 members and earned over $21 million in trade volume in a single week. Only rarely since November 2024 have weekly active users surpassed 1,500, indicating a drop in user interest.

Finances and Upcoming Development

Last December, Fantasy Top, under the leadership of Dragonfly, raised $4.25 million to advance its objective of financializing social media in spite of the slump. In the meantime, Monad has raised $244 million in an attempt to compete with well-known blockchain networks like Solana and Ethereum by providing quick and affordable transactions. On Wednesday, the network’s testnet went live, allocating tokens to more than 8.8 million Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) wallets according to their chain-specific behaviour. The mainnet debut date is still unknown, though.
