Sky Mavis Unveils Terrariums V1, Introducing a New Utility Layer for Axie Land NFTs

Blockchain gaming company Sky Mavis has launched Axie Infinity: Terrariums V1, a new land-focused earning system designed to give Axie landowners a practical way to utilize their digital plots following the closure of the earlier land-based game, Homeland.

The release marks a significant step for the Axie ecosystem, where land ownership has long been tied to the broader vision of Lunacia. Although land NFTs were sold years ago, creating a sustainable gameplay experience around them has remained a challenge. Terrariums represents a streamlined approach, shifting the focus from complex gameplay mechanics to a more accessible economic system that combines land and Axies.

Under the new model, players can activate their land plots, assign Axies, spend a resource known as Lunium, and earn rewards through hourly distributions of bAXS, a token used exclusively within the game. Unlike Homeland, which emphasized town-building and resource management, Terrariums offers a lighter experience centered on passive participation and asset utility.

The system revolves around two key components: Axies and Lunium. Assigned Axies generate Atia’s Flame, a metric that determines a plot’s share of reward distributions. Plots with higher Flame values receive a larger portion of rewards, while rarer Axies contribute significantly more Flame than common ones. Notably, Mystic Axies generate up to 200 times more Flame, giving premium and legacy Axies renewed relevance within the ecosystem.

Lunium serves as the fuel required to keep plots active and earning. The resource comes in two forms: Local Lunium, which is generated slowly and free of charge by individual plots, and Global Lunium, a purchasable resource that can be used across all plots owned by a player. This creates a strategic decision between waiting for free generation or spending resources to maintain continuous earning potential.

Rather than functioning as a simple passive reward mechanism, Terrariums introduces elements of optimization. Players must determine how much Lunium to allocate, which plots to activate, and which Axies to assign. Reward outcomes are influenced by competition, as each plot’s earnings depend on its Atia’s Flame relative to other active plots within the same category.

The design may encourage players with multiple plots and rare Axies to experiment with different strategies. High-tier plots do not automatically guarantee superior returns if competition is intense, while less crowded categories may offer better earning opportunities.

Sky Mavis has scheduled the first reward distribution for June 19 at 07:00 UTC. While players can activate plots beforehand, those relying solely on Local Lunium may need to wait for the resource to replenish, a process the company says can take approximately five days. Players seeking immediate participation can purchase Global Lunium through launch packages.

The monetization structure behind Terrariums is also noteworthy. Lunium can be acquired using bAXS, AXS, USDC, and WETH, but it is not a tradable asset. By keeping Lunium as an internal resource rather than a market-traded token, Sky Mavis aims to avoid introducing additional speculative elements into the Axie economy.

According to the company, proceeds from Lunium sales will be directed to a treasury-controlled wallet and used to support the ecosystem, including the acquisition of Axies. This creates a feedback loop linking land ownership, Axie utility, player spending, and ecosystem development.

Terrariums remains an early-stage release, with Sky Mavis confirming that several planned features are reserved for future updates. Upcoming additions are expected to include land item placement, evolved parts, accessories, Fortune Slips, estate multipliers, and expanded collectible part functionality.

For now, Terrariums V1 serves as the foundation for Axie Infinity’s renewed land strategy, providing landowners with a simpler and more sustainable way to engage with their assets while laying the groundwork for future expansion.
